142 – Abu Hatim al-Razi narrated to me; al-Qasim ibn ‘Uthman al-Dimashqi told me: I said to Yaman ibn Mu‘awiyah al-Aswad, the devoted worshipper, “Have you ever seen Ibrahim ibn Adham?”
He laughed and replied, “I have seen someone even greater than Ibrahim.”
I asked, “Who is that?”
He said, “Sufyan al-Thawri.” He then added, “I heard my brother Sufyan ibn Sa‘id al-Thawri say: ‘Allah would never bestow a blessing on a servant in this world and then disgrace him in the Hereafter. Indeed, it is only fitting for the Benefactor to perfect His favor upon the one He has favored.’”
