Al-ShukrIbn Abi al-Dunya

101 – Qāsim ibn Hāshim narrated to me. He reported from Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir—or someone else among the Basrans—who said:

A man once came to Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd, lamenting how tight his circumstances had become. Yūnus asked him, “Would you be willing to part with the eyesight by which you see for a hundred thousand dirhams?” The man replied, “No.” He said, “Then your two hands for a hundred thousand?” The man said, “No.” He said, “What about your two feet?” Again the man said, “No.” Yūnus thereupon reminded him of Allah’s favors and said, “I see that you already possess hundreds of thousands, yet you still complain of poverty.”
