861 — Al-Firyābī also narrated to us, saying: Mansūr ibn Abī Muzāhim narrated to us, saying: ⦗1292⦘ Ibrāhīm ibn Sad narrated to us, from his father, from Atā ibn Yasār, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Umar ibn al-Khattāb, may Allah be pleased with him:
“O Umar, how will you fare when a space of earth three cubits and a span long by one cubit and a span wide is prepared for you? Then your family will come to you, wash you, shroud you, and perfume you for burial. They will carry you away and place you out of sight within it, heap earth over you, and then depart from you. The two questioners of the grave, Munkar and Nakīr, will then come to you. Their voices will be like crashing thunder, and their gazes like blinding lightning. Their hair will hang down as they jolt you violently, terrify you, and ask, ‘Who is your Lord, and what is your religion?’”
Umar said, “O Prophet of Allah, will I still have the same heart I have today?”
He replied, “Yes.”
Umar said, “Then I shall deal with the two of them, by Allah’s permission—exalted is His majesty.”
