859 — Al-Firyābī narrated to us, saying: Al-Abbās ibn al-Walīd al-Narsī narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Zuray narrated to us, saying: Saīd—that is, Ibn Abī Arūba—narrated to us, from Qatāda, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“When a servant is placed in his grave and his companions turn away from him, he can indeed hear the clatter of their sandals. Two angels come to him and seat him upright. They ask, ‘What did you say about this man—about Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him?’ As for the believer, he will say, ‘I bear witness that he is the servant and Messenger of Allah.’ He will then be told, ‘Look at your place in the Fire. Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—has given you a place in Paradise in exchange for it.’”

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He will see both places”—or he said, “he will see them together.”

Qatāda said, “We were told that his grave will be expanded for him by seventy cubits and filled around him with fresh blessings until the Day of Resurrection.” He then returned to Anas’s hadith. ⦗1290⦘ He said:

“As for the disbeliever—or the hypocrite—he will be asked, ‘What did you say about this man?’ He will reply, ‘I do not know. I used to say what the people said.’ He will be told, ‘You neither knew nor studied!’ Then he will be struck once between the ears with an iron hammer. He will let out a scream that everyone near him will hear, except humankind and jinn.”
