858 — Al-Firyābī narrated to us, saying: Ubayd Allah ibn Umar al-Qawārīrī narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Zuray narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ishāq narrated to us, from Saīd ibn Abī Saīd, from Abū Hurayra, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“When one of you—or a human being—is buried, two black, blue-eyed angels come to him. One is called Munkar and the other Nakīr. They ask him, ‘What did you say about this man?’ He will answer as he used to answer. If he was a believer, he will say, ‘He is the servant and Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’ They will say, ‘We knew that you would say that.’ His grave will then be expanded for him to seventy cubits by seventy cubits and illuminated for him. He will then be told, ‘Sleep.’ He will say, ‘Let me return to my family and tell them.’ But he will be told, ‘Sleep as a newlywed sleeps, awakened only by the dearest of his family,’ until Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—resurrects him from that resting place.

⦗1289⦘ “But if he was a hypocrite, he will say, ‘I do not know. I used to hear people saying something, so I would say it too.’ They will say, ‘We knew that you would say that.’ The earth will then be commanded, ‘Close in upon him,’ and it will close in upon him until his ribs cross over one another. He will continue to be tormented therein until Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—resurrects him from that resting place.”
