856 — Ibn Dharīh informed us, saying: Hannād ibn al-Sarī narrated to us, saying: Abū Muāwiyah narrated to us, from al-Amash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, from Umm Mubashshir, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered upon me while I was in one of the orchards of Banū al-Najjār. It contained the graves of some of them who had died during the Age of Ignorance. She said: He then left, saying, “Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave.” She said: I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, are they indeed being punished in their graves?” He replied, “Yes—with a punishment that animals can hear.”
