849 — Abū Muhammad Yahyā ibn Muhammad ibn Sāʿid narrated to us, saying: Ziyād ibn Ayyūb al-Tūsī narrated to us, saying: Ziyād ibn Abd Allah al-Bakkāʾī narrated to us, saying: Mansūr and al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abbās, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by one of the gardens of ⦗1281⦘ Medina or Mecca and came upon two graves in which two men were being punished. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “They are being punished for nothing grave.” Then he said, “On the contrary! One of them did not protect himself from being soiled by his urine, while the other went about spreading malicious gossip.” He then said, “Bring me a palm stalk.” He split it into two and placed one piece upon each grave. The people asked, “Why did you do this, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Perhaps their punishment will be lightened for as long as the two pieces remain like this—or so long as they have not dried.”
