Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

848 — And al-Firyābī narrated to us, saying: Uthmān ibn Abī Shayba narrated to us, saying: Jarīr ibn Abd al-Hamīd narrated to us, from Mansūr, from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abbās, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by one of the gardens of Mecca or Medina and heard the voices of two people being punished in their graves. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “They are being punished, though they are not being punished for anything grave.” Then he said, “On the contrary! One of them did not protect himself from being soiled by his urine, while the other went about spreading malicious gossip.” He then called for ⦗1280⦘ a palm stalk, broke it into two pieces, and placed one piece upon each grave. He was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, why did you do this?” He replied, “Perhaps their punishment will be lightened so long as the two pieces have not dried—or until they dry.”
