842 – Al-Firyābī also narrated to us: ‘Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Abū al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Ash‘ath ibn Abī al-Sha‘thā’, from Masrūq, from ‘Ā’ishah—may Allah Most High have mercy on her—who said: A Jewish woman came to me and asked, “Have you heard him mention anything about the punishment of the grave?” I asked her, “What is the punishment of the grave?” She said ⦗1276⦘, “Ask him.” When the Prophet ﷺ came to her, she asked him about the punishment of the grave. He replied, “The punishment of the grave is real.” She said: Thereafter, whenever he performed a prayer at night, I heard him seek refuge from the punishment of the grave.
