838 — Abū Muhammad ibn Sāʿid also narrated to us, saying: al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan al-Marwazī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abī Adī informed us, saying: Humayd narrated to us, from ⦗1268⦘ Anas, who said:
“I entered upon Ibn Ziyād while they were discussing the Basin. When they saw me approach, they said, ‘Anas has come to you!’ They asked, ‘Anas, what do you say concerning the Basin?’ I replied, ‘By Allah, I never imagined that I would live to see the likes of you doubting the Basin! I left behind elderly women in Medina, not one of whom performs a prayer without asking her Lord—majestic is His glory—to bring her to the Basin of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).’”
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn (may Allah Most High have mercy upon him) said: Do you not see how Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) was astonished at those who doubted the Basin? For he regarded the Basin as something believed in by both the elite and the general populace—so much so that elderly women would ask Allah—majestic is His glory—to give them drink from the Prophet’s Basin (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). We therefore seek refuge with Allah from those who do not believe in the Basin and deny it. What we have mentioned concerning belief in the Basin that Allah—majestic is His glory—granted our Prophet Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) is sufficient, without need for further elaboration.
