754 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abda and Ya‘qūb ibn Humayd ibn Kāsib narrated to us, saying: Sufyān ibn Uyayna narrated to us, from Amr ibn Dīnār, from Tāwūs, who heard Abū Hurayra, may Allah be pleased with him, say: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Adam and Moses argued their respective cases. Moses said, ‘O Adam, you are our father, yet you caused us to suffer loss and had us expelled from Paradise?’ Adam replied, ‘You are Moses, whom Allah chose for His speech and for whom He wrote the Torah with His Hand. You have read the Torah; do you find therein that He decreed this for me forty years before He created me?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.’”

Ibn Abda said: On another occasion, Sufyān said: “And He wrote the Torah for you with His Hand? Do you blame me for something He decreed for me forty years before He created me?”
