749 — Jafar ibn Muhammad al-Sandalī narrated to us, saying: Zuhayr ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Abd Allāh ibn Abd al-Wahhāb al-Lahjī narrated to us, saying: al-Mughīra ibn Abd al-Rahmān ibn Hakīm ibn Hizām al-Qurashī narrated to us, from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Araj, from Abū Hurayra, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said:
“Allah, Exalted and Majestic, created Adam, peace be upon him, with His Hand on Friday, breathed into him of His Spirit, and commanded the angels to prostrate before him. They prostrated before him, ‘except Iblis. He was one of the jinn and rebelled against his Lord’s command’ [al-Kahf: 50].”
⦗1178⦘ Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: The Jahmite who denies that Allah created Adam with His Hand is told: “You have disbelieved in the Quran, rejected the sunnah, and opposed the Muslim community.”
As for the Quran, when Allah, Exalted and Majestic, commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam and they all did so except Iblis, Allah, Exalted and Majestic, said:
“What prevented you from prostrating before the one I created with My two Hands? Were you arrogant, or were you among the exalted?” [Sād: 75]
He also said in Surah al-Hijr:
“And when your Lord said to the angels, ‘I am creating a human being from sounding clay, from altered black mud. When I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, fall down before him in prostration.’ So the angels all prostrated together, except Iblis, who refused to be among those who prostrated.” [al-Hijr: 29]
Iblis envied Adam because Allah, Exalted and Majestic, had created him with His Hand, whereas He had not created Iblis with His Hand. When Moses, peace be upon him, met Adam, peace be upon him, and the two argued their respective cases, Moses’ argument to Adam included his saying: “Are you our father Adam—the one Allah Most High created with His Hand, into whom He breathed of His Spirit, and before whom He commanded the angels to prostrate?”
Thus, Moses argued against Adam by invoking the honor with which Allah, Exalted and Majestic, had singled Adam out above all others: Allah had created him with His Hand and commanded His angels to prostrate before him. Whoever denies this has disbelieved.
Adam then countered Moses, saying: “You are Moses, whom Allah ⦗1179⦘ chose for His speech and for whom He inscribed the Torah with His Hand”—and he mentioned the hadith.
