684 — Abu Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd also narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Sālih narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us, from Amr, from Tāwūs, who heard Abu Hurayra say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Adam and Moses argued their cases. Moses said, ‘You are Adam, our father. You caused us to leave Paradise and brought misery upon us!’

Adam replied, ‘You are Moses. Allah chose you by speaking to you and wrote for you—meaning the Torah—with His Hand. Do you blame me for something Allah decreed for me forty years before He created me?’

He said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument; thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.’”
