683 — Al-Firyābī informed us: Abu Masūd Ahmad ibn al-Furāt narrated to me, saying: Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl informed us: Hammād ibn Salama narrated to us, from Humayd, from al-Hasan, from Jundab, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Adam and Moses, peace be upon them, argued their cases. Moses said, ‘O Adam, you are the one whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created with His Hand, into whom He breathed of His Spirit, before whom He caused His angels to prostrate, and whom He settled in His Paradise. Yet you did what you did and caused your offspring to leave Paradise!’
Adam replied, ‘You are Moses, whom Allah sent with His message, to whom He spoke, to whom He gave the Torah, and whom He drew near for private converse. Which came first—me or the record?’
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument; thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.’”
