Abu al-Abbas Abd Allah ibn Saqr al-Sukkarī narrated to us, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir al-Hizāmī narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us. Through another chain, Abu Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Sālih al-Misrī and Abu al-Tāhir Ahmad ibn Amr al-Misrī narrated to us; they both said: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying: Hishām ibn Saʿd informed me, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Indeed, Moses, peace be upon him, said, ‘O Lord, show us Adam, who caused us to be expelled from Paradise.’ So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, showed him Adam, peace be upon him. Moses asked, ‘Are you our father Adam?’

Adam replied, ‘Yes.’

Moses said, ‘Are you the one into whom Allah, Mighty and Majestic, breathed of His Spirit, whom He taught all the names, and before whom He commanded His angels to prostrate?’

He replied, ‘Yes.’

Moses asked, ‘Then what induced you to cause yourself and us to leave Paradise?’

Adam asked him, ‘And who are you?’

He replied, ‘I am Moses.’

Adam asked, ‘Are you the prophet of the Children of Israel? Are you the one to whom Allah—glorious is His remembrance—spoke from behind a veil, placing no messenger from among His creation between you and Him ⦗1112⦘?’

He replied, ‘Yes.’

Adam asked, ‘Did you not find in Allah’s Book that this had been written by Allah before I was created?’

He replied, ‘Yes.’

Adam said, ‘Then why do you blame me for something Allah Most High had already decreed before me?’

Thereupon, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument; thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument.’”
