680 — Abu al-Fadl Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad al-Sandalī narrated to us, saying: We were told by ⦗1110⦘ al-Fadl ibn Ziyād, who said: We were told by Abu Tālib, who said: I asked Abu ʿAbd Allah Ahmad ibn Hanbal about one who says, “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not speak to Moses.” He replied, “He is to be called to repent. If he repents, that is accepted; otherwise, he is to be beheaded.” Abu ʿAbd Allah also said: I heard ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Mahdī say regarding this very issue, “Whoever says, ‘Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not speak to Moses,’ is an unbeliever. He is to be called to repent; if he repents, that is accepted, but otherwise he is to be beheaded.”
