669 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Alī ibn al-Husayn ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, saying: Abū Muāwiyah al-Darīr narrated to us, from al-Amash, from Abū al-Duhā, from Masrūq, from Abd Allah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“When Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—speaks through revelation, the inhabitants of heaven hear a metallic clang like a chain being dragged over smooth rock. At this,” he said, “they fall unconscious and remain so until Gabriel—peace be upon him—comes to them. When Gabriel comes to them, terror is lifted from their hearts. They then,” he said, “ask, ‘O Gabriel, what did your Lord say?’ He replies, ‘The truth.’ Then they call out, ‘The truth! The truth!’” ⦗1095⦘

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, may Allah have mercy on him, said: These traditions are concordant in meaning, each corroborating the others. All of them indicate what we have said: Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—is upon His Throne, above His heavens; His knowledge encompasses all things; and He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, All-Knowing, All-Aware. He—Exalted is His remembrance—has said:

“Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High.” [al-A'lā: 1]

Whenever the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, began his supplication, he would say: “Glory be to my Lord, the High, the Most High, the Bestower.” A group of the Companions, whenever they recited, “Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High” [al-A'lā: 1], would say: “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” Among them were Alī ibn Abī Tālib, Ibn Abbās, Ibn Masūd, and Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught his community to say three times while prostrating: “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” ⦗1096⦘

All of this further strengthens what we have said: Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—the High, the Most High, is upon His Throne, above the lofty heavens, while His knowledge encompasses all things. This is contrary to what the proponents of divine indwelling claim. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of their doctrine.
