667 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Salamah ibn Shabīb ⦗1091⦘ narrated to us, saying: Hafs ibn Abd al-Rahmān narrated to us, saying: I heard Muhammad ibn Ishāq narrate from Yaʿqūb ibn Utbah, from Jubayr ibn Muhammad ibn Jubayr ibn Mutʿim, from his father, from his grandfather, who said:

“I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when a Bedouin came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, the livestock are suffering terribly, the dependants are hungry, property has been lost, and livestock have perished. Pray for rain for us. We seek your intercession with Allah—Glorious is His Majesty—and we seek Allah’s intercession with you.’

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Do you realize what you are saying?’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then glorified Allah and continued doing so until its effect could be seen on the faces of his Companions. He said, ‘Woe to you! Allah is not sought as an intercessor with anyone. Allah’s majesty is far greater than that. Woe to you! He is indeed above His heavens and upon His Throne, and it is thus—like a dome’—and he gestured with his hand—‘and it creaks as a saddle creaks beneath a rider.’”
