61 — Hāmid ibn Shuayb al-Balkhī narrated to us, saying: Abū Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to us, saying: Ishāq ibn Yūsuf al-Azraq narrated to us, from al-Amash, from Ibn Abī Awfā, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said, “The Khārijites are the dogs of Hell.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said ⦗371⦘: I have mentioned sufficient warnings against the doctrines of the Khārijites for anyone whom Allah Most High has protected from their way: one who does not espouse their views; patiently endures the injustice of the leaders and the tyranny of the rulers; does not take up the sword against them; asks Allah Most High to relieve him and the Muslims of oppression; prays that the rulers be rectified; performs Hajj with them; fights alongside them against every enemy of the Muslims; and performs the Friday and Eid prayers with them. If they command him to perform an act of obedience and he is able to do so, he obeys them; if he is unable, he offers them his excuse; and if they command him to commit a sin, he does not obey them. Whenever ⦗372⦘ civil strife erupts among them, he remains in his home, restrains his tongue and his hand, does not approve of what they are engaged in, and does not assist in any strife. Whoever fits this description is upon the straight path, Allah willing.
