59 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd also narrated to us, saying: My paternal uncle narrated to us, saying: Ismah ibn al-Mutawakkil narrated to us, saying: al-Mubārak ibn Fadālah narrated to me, from Abū Ghālib, who said: I was in Greater Syria, where Sudayy ibn Ajlān Abū Umāmah, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, lived. He was a friend of mine. The heads of the Harurites were brought and cast upon the steps. Abū Umāmah came and prayed two units of prayer, then turned toward the heads. I said, “I shall follow him so that I may hear what he says.” I followed him until he stood over them ⦗368⦘ and wept. He then said, “Glory be to Allah! What has Satan done to the people of this nation?” Then he said, “Dogs of the people of Hellfire! Dogs of Hellfire! Dogs of Hellfire!”—three times. He then said, “They are the worst of those slain beneath heaven’s canopy, while the best of those slain are those whom they killed.” He then recited this verse: “It is He who has sent down the Book to you. Some of its verses are definitive—they are the foundation of the Book—while others are ambiguous. Those in whose hearts is deviation follow what is ambiguous in it, seeking discord and seeking its interpretation. Yet no one knows its interpretation except Allah.” [Āl Imrān: 7]
