560 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us, saying: I heard Muʿādh ⦗962⦘ ibn Muʿādh say: ʿUmar ibn al-Haytham informed me, saying: “I set out by ship for al-Ubulla together with its judge, Hubayra ibn al-ʿUdays. A Magian and a Qadarī accompanied us aboard the ship. The Qadarī said to the Magian, ‘Embrace Islam.’ The Magian replied, ‘When Allah wills.’ The Qadarī said, ‘Allah wills it, but Satan will not let you.’ The Magian replied, ‘Allah willed and Satan willed, yet what Satan willed came to pass. This is a powerful devil!’”
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: Al-Firyābī related this exchange between the Qadarī and the Magian in Persian; he then translated it for us to this effect, or words to that effect.
٥٦٠ - أَخْبَرَنَا الْفِرْيَابِيُّ قَالَ: نا عَمْرُو بْنُ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ مُعَاذَ ⦗٩٦٢⦘ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ يَقُولُ: أَخْبَرَنِي عُمَرُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ قَالَ: خَرَجْتُ فِي سَفِينَةٍ إِلَى الْأُبُلَّةِ أَنَا وَقَاضِيهَا هُبيَرْةُ بْنُ الْعُدَيْسِ قَالَ: وَصَحَبَنَا فِي السَّفِينَةِ مَجُوسٌ وَقَدَرِيُّ قَالَ: فَقَالَ الْقَدَرِيُّ لِلْمَجُوسِيِّ: أَسْلِمْ قَالَ: فَقَالَ الْمَجُوسِيُّ حِينَ يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ قَالَ فَقَالَ الْقَدَرِيُّ: اللَّهُ يُرِيدُ وَالشَّيْطَانُ لَا يَدَعُكَ قَالَ: يَقُولُ الْمَجُوسِيُّ: أَرَادَ اللَّهُ، وَأَرَادَ الشَّيْطَانُ، فَكَانَ مَا أَرَادَ الشَّيْطَانُ، هَذَا شَيْطَانٌ قَوِيُّ " قَالَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ: هَذَا الْكَلَامُ ذَكَرَهُ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ بِالْفَارِسِيَّةِ عَنِ الْقَدَرِيِّ وَالْمَجُوسِيِّ، ثُمَّ فَسَّرَهُ لَنَا الْفِرْيَابِيُّ هَذَا الْمَعْنَى وَنَحْوَهَ
