537 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Qutayba ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, saying: Al-Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from ʿUqayl, from al-Zuhrī, from Musāfiʿ the Chamberlain, who said:
“When they dismantled the House, they found a stone with three faces bearing an inscription from the writings of the ancients. A man was summoned to read them. On one face was written: ‘I am Allah, Lord of Bakkah. I fashioned it on the day I fashioned the sun and the moon, surrounded it with seven angels, and blessed its people with meat and water.’
“On the second face was written: ‘I am Allah, Lord of Bakkah. I created the bond of kinship and derived its name from ⦗943⦘ My own name. Whoever maintains it, I shall maintain him; and whoever severs it, I shall cut him off.’
“On the third face was written: ‘I am Allah, Lord of Bakkah. I created good and evil. Blessed is the one through whose hands good comes about, and woe to the one through whose hands evil comes about.’”
