Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

530 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Abū al-Mundhir Anbasa ibn Yahyā ⦗934⦘ al-Marwazī narrated to us in al-Shāsh in 228 AH, saying: Abū Dāwūd al-Hafarī narrated to us, from Abū Rajā, who said: An official of Umar ibn Abd al-Azīz wrote to him asking about divine decree. He wrote back:

“To proceed: I counsel you to fear Allah Most High, to follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), to strive diligently in carrying out His command, and to abandon what the innovators introduced after him.”

He then related the hadith in wording similar to the preceding hadith.

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Our proof against the Qadariyyah is the Book of Allah Most High, the Sunnah of His Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), the way of his Companions and those who followed them faithfully, and the statements of the leading scholars of the Muslims. At the same time, we abstain from disputation, contentious debate, and probing into divine decree, for we have been forbidden to do so. We have been commanded to refrain from sitting with the Qadariyyah, debating them, or initiating discussion with them by way of argumentation. Rather, they are to be shunned, treated with contempt, and humiliated. Prayer is not to be performed behind any one of them; their testimony is not to be accepted; and none of them is to be given a wife in marriage. If one of them falls ill, he is not to be visited; if he dies, his funeral is not to be attended; and if he hosts a wedding feast, his invitation is not to be accepted. If he comes seeking guidance, he is to be guided by way of sincere counsel. If he recants, then praise be to Allah; but if he returns to disputation and contentious debate, no attention is to be paid to him. He is to be driven away, and others are to be warned against him. He is neither to be spoken to nor greeted with peace.
