48 — And Abū Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Shāhīn narrated to us, saying: al-Salt ibn Masūd narrated to us, saying: Jafar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: al-Muallā ibn Ziyād narrated to us, saying: al-Hasan was told, “Abū Saīd, a Kharijite has risen in revolt at al-Khurayba.” He replied, “The poor man saw a wrong and sought to oppose it, but fell into something even worse.”
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: Thus, when someone witnesses the religious zeal of a Kharijite who has rebelled against a ruler—whether that ruler is just or unjust—then gone forth, gathered a faction, drawn his sword, and deemed it lawful to fight the Muslims, he must not be deceived by the man’s recitation of the Quran, his lengthy standing in prayer, his constant fasting, or his eloquent discourse on religious knowledge, so long as he follows the way of the Kharijites. Reports supporting what I have said have been narrated from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, which many of the ⦗346⦘ Muslim scholars do not dispute. Indeed, perhaps all the leading Muslim scholars agree regarding them.
