467 — Abū Zakariyyā Yahyā ibn Muhammad al-Hinnāʾī also informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Hisāb narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Khālid al-Hadhdhā, who said: “I went away on a journey and then returned. I was told, ‘Al-Hasan has spoken about predestination.’ So I went to him and said, ‘O Abū Saīd, was Adam created for the earth or for heaven?’ He replied, ‘What sort of question is this, O Abū Manāzil?’ I said, ‘I would like to know.’ He replied, ‘For the earth.’ I asked, ‘What do you think—if he had resisted and not eaten from the tree?’ He replied, ‘He could not but eat from it, because he was created for the earth.’”
