When I returned, people were saying, ‘Al-Hasan said this, and al-Hasan said that.’ So I went to him and entered his home. I said, ‘O Abū Saīd, tell me about Adam: was he created for heaven or for the earth?’ He replied, ‘What sort of question is this, O Abū Manāzil?’” Hammād said: “Khālid told me, ‘This was not among the questions we used to ask.’” He continued: “I said, ‘O Abū Saīd, I would like to know.’ He replied, ‘Rather, he was created for the earth.’ I asked him, ‘What do you think—if he had resisted and not eaten from the tree?’ He replied, ‘He could not but eat from it, because he ⦗885⦘ was created for the earth.’”
