459 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us, saying: Ismāīl ibn Ulayyah narrated to us from Mansūr ibn Abd al-Rahmān, who said: I asked al-Hasan about the words of the Exalted: “They will continue to differ, except those upon whom your Lord has mercy” [Hūd 11:119]. He replied, “People are divided among various religions, except those upon whom your Lord has mercy; those upon whom your Lord has mercy do not differ.” I asked, “And what of His words, ‘And for that He created them’?” He replied, “Yes. He created some for Paradise and others for the Fire; He created some for mercy and others for punishment.”
