458 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Qutaybah ibn Saīd narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us from Khālid al-Hadhdhā, who said: A man from Kufa came to us. He had been keeping his distance from al-Hasan because of what he had heard about his views on divine decree, until he met him. The man asked him—or al-Hasan was asked—about this verse: “They will continue to differ, except those upon whom your Lord has mercy; and for that He created them” [Hūd 11:119]. He replied, “Those upon whom Allah has mercy do not differ.” Then, concerning His words, “And for that He created them,” he said, “He created the people of Paradise for Paradise and the people of the Fire for the Fire.” Thereafter, the man would refute the lies attributed to al-Hasan.
