452 — Al-Firyābī also informed us, saying: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shayba narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Saʿīd informed us, from Abū al-Zubayr, who related that he was with Tāwūs, circumambulating the House, when Maʿbad al-Juhanī passed by. Someone said to Tāwūs, “This is Maʿbad al-Juhanī.” Tāwūs turned toward him and said, “Are you the one who fabricates lies against Allah—the one who says what he does not know?” He replied, “He is lying about me.”

Abū al-Zubayr said: He then went with Tāwūs until we entered upon Ibn ʿAbbās. Tāwūs said, “O Abū al-ʿAbbās, what of those who speak concerning divine decree?” He replied, “Show me one of them.” We asked, “What would you do?” He said, “I would seize him by the head and break his neck.”
