442 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, saying: ʿAlī ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqīq narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allāh—that is, Ibn al-Mubārak—narrated to us, saying: ⦗867⦘ Ibn Jurayj narrated to me, from al-Zubayr ibn Mūsā, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“Allah Most High struck Adam’s right shoulder, peace be upon him, and every soul created for Paradise emerged, white and pure. He said, ‘These are the people of Paradise.’ Then He struck his left shoulder, and every soul created for the Hellfire emerged, black. He said, ‘These are the people of the Hellfire.’ Then He took a covenant from all the children of Adam that they would believe in Him, know Him and His command, and affirm His command. He made them bear witness against themselves, and they believed, affirmed, knew, and acknowledged.”
