436 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Musaffā Abū ʿAbd Allāh ⦗862⦘ al-Himsī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Harb narrated to us, saying: Al-Zubaydī narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf:
During ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf’s illness, he fell into a swoon so severe that they thought he had died. We rose from his side, and they covered him with a cloth. Umm Kulthūm, daughter of ʿUqbah and wife of ʿAbd al-Rahmān, went out to the mosque, seeking help through the patience and prayer she had been commanded to observe.
They remained there for a time while ʿAbd al-Rahmān was unconscious. Then he regained consciousness, and the first thing he uttered was the takbīr (declaration of Allah’s greatness). His household and those nearby likewise pronounced the takbīr. ʿAbd al-Rahmān asked them, “Did I lose consciousness just now?”
They replied, “Yes.”
He said, “You have spoken the truth. While I was unconscious, two men took me away, and I perceived severity and harshness in them. They said, ‘Come with us so that we may bring your case before the Almighty, the Trustworthy.’ They took me away until we met a man who asked, ‘Where are you taking this man?’
“They replied, ‘We are taking his case before the Almighty, the Trustworthy.’
“He said, ‘Take him back, for he is among those for whom Allah decreed felicity and forgiveness while they were still in their mothers’ wombs. His sons shall continue to benefit from him for as long as Allah wills.’” ⦗863⦘
He lived for one month after that and then died.
437 — Al-Firyābī also informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn ʿUzayz narrated to us, saying: Salāmah ibn Rawh narrated to me, from ʿUqayl ibn Khālid, who said: Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī narrated to me, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf narrated to me that he said:
“During ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn ʿAwf’s illness, he fell unconscious.” He then related a report similar to the preceding one.
