427 — Abū Muhammad ʿAbd Allah ibn Sālih al-Bukhārī also informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Sulaymān Luwayn narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Matar al-Warrāq, who said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah narrated to me, from Yahyā ibn Yaʿmar, who said:
“When Maʿbad al-Juhanī began making his claims concerning divine predestination, we rejected what he had brought forth. Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān al-Himyarī and I then performed Hajj. When we had completed our rites, one of us said to the other, ‘Let us take the road to Medina’—or perhaps he said, ‘What if we turned toward Medina?’—‘There we could meet those of the Prophet’s Companions who remained and ask them about what Maʿbad had brought forth.’
“So we turned toward Medina and entered the mosque, intending to seek out Abū Saʿīd or Ibn ʿUmar. There was Ibn ʿUmar, seated, so we sat on either side of him ⦗852⦘. Humayd put me forward to ask the question, for I was bolder in speech than he was. I said, ‘Abū ʿAbd al-Rahmān, some people have arisen in Iraq who recite the Quran and have gained understanding of the religion, yet they say that there is no divine predestination.’
“He said, ‘If you meet them, tell them: “Ibn ʿUmar has nothing to do with them, and they have nothing to do with me. If they were to spend all the gold contained in the earth, it would not be accepted from them until they believed in divine predestination.”’” He then related the hadith in full.
428 — Al-Firyābī also informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn ʿUbayd ibn Hisāb narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, and he related the same hadith in full.
Al-Firyābī also narrated to us, saying: Ishāq ibn Rāhawayh narrated to us, saying: al-Nadr ibn Shumayl informed us, saying: Kahmas ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah narrated to us, from Yahyā ibn Yaʿmar.
Al-Firyābī said: Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā also narrated to me, saying: al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: I heard Kahmas report from Ibn Buraydah, from Yahyā ibn Yaʿmar. Both versions state:
“The first person in Basra to make this claim concerning divine predestination was Maʿbad al-Juhanī. Humayd ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān and I therefore set out to perform Hajj or ʿUmrah.” He then related ⦗853⦘ the hadith in full. We have cited it elsewhere.
