418 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Wahb ibn Baqiyya al-Wāsitī narrated to us, saying: Khālid—namely Ibn ʿAbd Allah—informed us, from Khālid—namely Ibn Mihrān al-Hadhdhāʾ, Abū al-Manāzil—from ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn ʿAbd Allah, from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Hārith ibn Nawfal, who said:
ʿUmar, may Allah be pleased with him, delivered a sermon to us at al-Jābiya while the Catholicos stood before him and an interpreter translated. ʿUmar said, “Whomever Allah guides, none can lead astray; and whomever He leads astray, none can guide.” He then related the hadith to its conclusion.
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: We have already cited from ʿUmar and ʿAlī, may Allah be pleased with them both, their hadith from the Prophet ﷺ concerning the divine decree. It constitutes a major foundation for refuting the wretched Qadariyya. ⦗842⦘
It has also been narrated that ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib, may Allah honor his countenance, used to teach the people to affirm the divine decree and that Allah Most High created His creatures, some wretched and others blessed.
