399 — Abū Bakr al-Qāsim ibn Zakariyyā al-Mutarriz narrated to us, saying: Abū Kurayb Muhammad ibn al-Alā narrated to us, saying: Abū Muāwiya narrated to us, from al-Amash, from Abū Sālih, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Every newborn is born upon the innate natural disposition, until his tongue speaks on his behalf. His parents then make him a Jew, a Christian, or a polytheist.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what, then, of those who died before reaching that stage?” He replied, “Allah knows best what they would have done.”
