39 — Abū Hafs Umar ibn Ayyūb al-Saqatī narrated to us, saying: Mansūr ibn Abī Muzāhim narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Yūsuf narrated to us, from al-Awzā‘ī, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahmān and al-Dahhāk al-Hamdānī, from Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, who said: While the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was making a distribution one day, Dhu al-Khuwaysirah al-Tamīmī said, “O Messenger of Allah, be just!” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Woe to you! Who would be just if I were not just?” Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) stood and said, “O Messenger of Allah, will you permit ⦗334⦘ me to strike off his head?” He replied, “No. He has companions beside whose prayer each of you would consider his own prayer insignificant, and beside whose fasting he would consider his own fasting insignificant. They pass clean through the religion just as an arrow passes clean through its quarry. The archer examines its arrowhead but finds nothing on it; then he examines its sinew binding ⦗335⦘ but finds nothing on it; then he examines its shaft but finds nothing on it; then he examines its fletching but finds nothing on it. It passed through before the dung and blood could stain it. They will emerge at a time of division among the people. Their distinguishing sign will be a very dark-skinned man, one of whose hands is like a woman’s breast, or like a lump of flesh swaying to and fro.” Abū Sa‘īd said, “I bear witness that I indeed heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ⦗336⦘, and I bear witness that I was with Ali ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) when he killed them and searched among the slain. The man was brought forth exactly as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had described him.”
