371 — Al-Firyābī informed us: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ibrāhīm al-Dimashqī narrated to us: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us: Uthmān ibn Abī al-Atika narrated to us: Sulaymān ibn Habīb narrated to us, from al-Walīd ibn Ubāda, that when his father, Ubāda ibn al-Sāmit, was nearing death, his son Abd al-Rahmān asked him, “Father, counsel me.” He said, “Sit me up.” When they had seated him upright, he said, “My son, fear Allah. You will not truly fear Allah until you believe in Allah, and you will not believe in Allah ⦗792⦘ until you believe in the divine decree, both its good and its evil, and know that whatever befell you could never have missed you, and whatever missed you could never have befallen you.” I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say, “This is the divine decree. Whoever dies upon anything other than this will enter the Fire.”
