36 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Īsā ibn Hammād Zughbah narrated to us, saying: al-Layth ibn Sa‘d informed us, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir ibn Abdullah, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as he was returning from Khaybar. There was silver in a cloth belonging to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was taking handfuls from it and giving them away. The man said, “O Muhammad, be just!” He replied, “Woe to you! Who would be just if ⦗329⦘ I were not just? I would surely have failed and lost if I were not just.” Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah, let me kill this hypocrite.” He replied, “Allah forbid that people should say that I kill my companions! This man and his fellows recite the Qur’an, but it does not pass beyond their throats. They pass clean through the religion just as an arrow passes clean through its quarry.”
