353 — Abū Bakr Abd Allah ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Salih al-Misrī and Abū al-Tāhir Ahmad ibn Amr narrated to us; they both said: Abd Allah ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Hishām ibn Sa‘d informed me, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Moses—peace be upon him—said, ‘O Lord, show us Adam, ⦗773⦘ who caused us to be expelled from Paradise.’ Allah Most High then showed him Adam. Moses asked, ‘Are you our father Adam?’ Adam replied, ‘Yes.’ Moses said, ‘Are you the one into whom Allah, Glorious and Exalted, breathed of His Spirit, whom He taught all the names, and before whom He commanded His angels to prostrate?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Moses asked, ‘Then what led you to cause us and yourself to be expelled from Paradise?’ Adam asked him, ‘And who are you?’ He replied, ‘I am Moses.’ Adam asked, ‘Are you the prophet of the Children of Israel, the one to whom Allah spoke from behind a veil, placing no messenger from His creation between you and Him?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Adam asked, ‘Did you find in the Book of Allah Most High that this had been written in Allah’s Book before I was created?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Adam said, ‘Then why do you blame me for something concerning which Allah’s decree had already been issued before my creation?’” The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument”—peace be upon them both.
