352 — Abū al-Abbās Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Saqr al-Sukkarī narrated to us, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mundhir al-Hizāmī narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying: Hishām ibn Sa‘d narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Moses—peace be upon him—said, ‘O Lord, show us our father Adam, who caused us and himself to be expelled from Paradise.’ Allah, Glorious and Exalted, then showed him Adam. Moses asked him, ‘Are you Adam?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Moses said, ‘Are you the one into whom Allah breathed of His Spirit, whom He taught all the names, and before whom He then commanded His angels to prostrate?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Moses asked, ‘Then what led you to cause us and yourself to be expelled from Paradise?’ Adam asked him, ‘And who are you?’ He replied, ‘I am Moses.’ Adam asked, ‘The prophet of the Children of Israel? Are you the one to whom Allah, Glorious and Exalted, spoke from behind a veil, placing no messenger from His creation between you and Him?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Adam asked, ‘Did you find in the Book of Allah, Glorious and Exalted, that this was destined to occur before I was created?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ Adam said, ‘Then why do you blame me for something concerning which Allah’s decree had already been issued before I was created?’” The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument”—peace be upon them both.
