335 – Al-Firyābī also informed us, saying: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us, saying: Alī ibn Hāshim narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, who said: Surāqah ibn Jushum stood before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah, tell us about our deeds, as though we had been created this very hour: are they something already established in the Book and determined by the decrees, or something we initiate anew?” He replied ⦗756⦘, “No; rather, they are something already established in the Book and determined by the decrees.” He asked, “O Messenger of Allah, then what purpose is there in deeds?” He replied, “Perform deeds, for everyone is facilitated for the deeds he is to perform.”
