328 – Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Minjāb ibn al-Hārith and Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shayba narrated to us. Minjāb said, “Abū al-Ahwas informed us,” while Abū Bakr said, “Abū al-Ahwas narrated to us,” from Mansūr, from Sad ibn Ubayda, from Abū Abd al-Rahmān, from Alī ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a funeral. When we reached Baqī al-Gharqad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down, and we sat around him. He took a stick and began tracing the ground with it. Then he raised his head and said, “There is no one among you—no living soul—but that its place in Paradise or the Fire is already known, as is whether it will be wretched or felicitous.”
A man among the people asked, “O Messenger of Allah, should we not abandon deeds and rely upon what has been written for us? Whoever among us belongs to the people of felicity will ultimately come to felicity, and whoever among us belongs to the people of wretchedness will ultimately come to wretchedness.”
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Act, for everyone is facilitated. Whoever belongs to the people of wretchedness is facilitated toward the deeds of wretchedness, and whoever belongs to the people of felicity is facilitated toward the deeds of felicity.”
Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: “As for the one who gives and fears Allah, and affirms the finest reward, We shall facilitate for him the path of ease. But as for the one who is miserly and considers himself self-sufficient ⦗748⦘, and denies the finest reward, We shall facilitate for him the path of hardship.” [al-Layl: 6]
329 – Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Minjāb ibn al-Hārith narrated to us, saying: Ibn Mushir narrated to us, from al-Amash, from Sad ibn Ubayda, from Abū Abd al-Rahmān, from Alī ibn Abī Tālib, who said that while they were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—and he related substantially the same hadith. Alī’s hadith has numerous chains of transmission, of which we have deemed those cited above sufficient.
