325 – Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Hishām ibn Ammār al-Dimashqī narrated to us, saying: Anas ibn Iyād narrated to us, saying: Al-Awzāī narrated to us, from Ibn Shihāb, from Saīd ibn al-Musayyib, who heard Abū Hurayra say: Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “O Messenger of Allah, do we act in a matter that we ourselves initiate, or in one that has already been settled?” He replied, “Rather, in a matter that has already been settled.” Umar asked, “What, then, is the purpose of deeds?” He replied, “O Umar, that cannot be attained except through deeds.” Umar said, “Then we shall strive, O Messenger of Allah.”
