322 — Al-Firyābī informed us, saying: Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shayba narrated to us, saying: Wakīʿ narrated to us ⦗736⦘, from Sufyān, from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Rufayʿ, from someone who heard ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr say:

“Adam (peace be upon him) said, ‘My Lord, tell me concerning what I originated: did it come from myself, or was it something You had decreed for me before creating me?’ He replied, ‘No; rather, it was something I had decreed for you before creating you.’” He said, “This is the meaning of His words, Most High: ‘Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful’ [al-Baqara: 37].”
