314 — Al-Firyābī also informed us, saying: Qutaybah ibn Sa'īd narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Khālid al-Hadhdhā', who said: A man from Kūfah came to us. He had kept aloof from al-Hasan because of the reports that had reached him concerning al-Hasan’s views on divine decree. Eventually, he met him, and the man asked him—or he was asked—about this verse: “Yet they will continue to differ, except those upon whom your Lord has mercy—and for that He created them.” [Hūd: 119] He replied: “Those who receive Allah’s mercy do not differ.” The man asked: “And for that He created them?” He replied: “Allah Most High created the people of Paradise for Paradise and the people of the Fire for the Fire.” Thereafter, the man would defend ⦗721⦘ al-Hasan ⦗722⦘.

Allah Most High says in the surah named after Abraham, peace be upon him:

“We never sent any messenger except in the language of his people, so that he might make matters clear to them. Then Allah causes whom He wills to stray and guides whom He wills. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.” [Ibrāhīm: 4]

Allah Most High says in the Surah of Light:

“We have indeed sent down clear verses, and Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.” [al-Nūr: 46]

Allah Most High says to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the Surah of the Stories:

“You cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills, and He knows best those who are guided.”

He also says to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the Surah of the Angels:

“Indeed, Allah causes whom He wills to hear, but you cannot make those in the graves hear. You are only a warner.” [Fātir: 22]

Allah Most High says in the surah Hā Mīm, 'Ayn Sīn Qāf:

“Had Allah willed, He could have made them one community, but He admits whom He wills into His mercy.” [al-Shūrā: 8]

He says in the Surah of the Cloaked One:

“No indeed! This is a reminder, so let whoever wills take heed ⦗723⦘. Yet they will not take heed unless Allah wills. He alone is worthy of being feared and worthy of granting forgiveness.” [al-Muddaththir: 54]

Allah Most High also says in the surah, “Has there not come upon man a period of time when he was nothing worth mentioning?” [al-Insān: 1] After warning of the Fire and inspiring longing for the Gardens through what He has prepared therein for His devoted servants, He then says:

“Indeed, this is a reminder; so let whoever wills take a path to his Lord.” [al-Muzzammil: 19]

Then He says:

“Yet you do not will unless Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. He admits whom He wills into His mercy; and for the wrongdoers He has prepared a painful punishment.”

Allah Most High says in the surah “When the Sun Is Folded Up”:

“For whoever among you wills to follow the straight path. Yet you do not will unless Allah, Lord of the worlds, wills.”
