The Most High says in this surah to Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
“They seek to frighten you with those besides Him. Whoever Allah leads astray will have no guide; and whoever Allah guides will have none to lead him astray. Is Allah not Almighty, the Lord of Retribution?” [al-Zumar: 36]
The Most High says in Sūrat Hā Mīm al-Mu’min:
“On the Day you turn and flee, you will have no protector against Allah. Whoever Allah leads astray will have no guide.” [Ghāfir: 33]
The Most High says in Sūrat al-Muddaththir:
“Thus Allah leads astray whomever He wills and guides whomever He wills.” [al-Muddaththir: 31]
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: Know, O Muslims, that your Generous Master informs you that He guides whomever He wills, placing the love of faith in his heart so that he believes and affirms the truth; and He leads astray whomever He wills, whereupon neither a prophet nor anyone else can guide him after Allah has led him away from faith.
