24—Abū al-Fadl Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sandalī narrated to us: Abū Bakr ibn Zanjawayh narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī narrated to us: Sufyān—meaning al-Thawrī—narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ziyād, from Abd Allāh ibn ⦗309⦘ Yazīd, from Abd Allāh ibn Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “My nation will surely experience exactly what the Children of Israel experienced, just as one sandal matches the other. The Children of Israel split into seventy-two sects, and my nation will split into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in the Fire except one sect.” He was asked, “Which is it, O Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?” He replied, peace and blessings be upon him: “The way that I and my Companions follow today.”
