23—Abū ʿAbd Allāh Ahmad ibn al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-Sūfī also informed us: al-Haytham ibn Khārijah narrated to us: Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Ziyād ibn Anʿam, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “My nation will surely experience what the Children of Israel experienced. The Children of Israel split into seventy-two sects, and my nation will split into seventy-three ⦗308⦘—one more than theirs. All of them will be in the Fire except one sect.” They asked, “Which is this one sect?” He replied, “The way that I and my Companions follow.”
