215 — And Abū Bakr ibn Abd al-Hamīd informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Fadl narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Salama narrated to us, saying: Abū Jafar al-Khatmī narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, Umayr ibn Habīb, who said: “Faith increases and decreases.” He was asked, “What causes it to increase and decrease?” He replied: “When we remember Allah—Glorious and Exalted is He—praise Him, and fear Him, that is its increase. But when we become heedless and neglect our duties, that is its decrease.”
