212 — Abū Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hamīd al-Wāsitī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us, saying: Safwān ibn Īsā narrated to us, from Ibn ⦗581⦘ Ajlān, from al-Qaqā ibn Hakīm, from Abū Sālih, from Abū Hurayra, from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—who said: “Whenever a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents, gives up the sin, and seeks forgiveness, his heart is polished clean of it. But if he commits further sins, the spot grows until it covers his heart. That is the stain.” Allah Most High said: “No indeed! Rather, what they used to earn has encrusted their hearts.” [al-Mutaffifīn: 14]
