20—Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us: al-Musayyab ibn Wādih narrated to us, saying ⦗304⦘: I heard Yūsuf ibn Asbāt say: “The roots of religious innovation are four: the Rāfidah, the Kharijites, the Qadariyyah, and the Murjiʾah. Each group then branches into eighteen sects, making seventy-two sects. The seventy-third is the united community, which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said ‘is the saved one.’”
